We are at a time of the year which is considered significant for those on the spiritual path. The Tamil month of Margazhi starts from December 16th. The importance of Margazhi Masam was announced by none other than Lord Krishna in the Bhagavad Gita when he says “Maasanam Margasheershoham - among the twelve months, I am Margazhi.” Rendering of Tiruppavai and Tiruvembavai, religious discourses and music festivals are the major highlights during the period. Vaikunta Ekadasi fasting is observed in this month.
The month is also of great significance in the Srirangam Sri Ranganatha Temple. The sprawling area, gigantic gopurams, vast mandapams make Srirangam temple an unforgettable place to visit. The annual 21-day festival conducted during the Tamil month of Margazhi (December–January) attracts 1 million visitors.
Apart from the Vaikunta Ekadasi, the Srirangam temple during the month witnesses the Pagal pathu and Rapathu – the chanting of Tiruvaimozhi. The Vaikunata ekadasi festival which falls on 8th of January 2017 sees hordes of devotees thronging the temple to enter through the Swarga Vasal the day on which Lord Vishnu opens the doors of His inner sanctum Vaikunta to everyone.
Margazhi at Trichy is a truly magical experience. It is one perfect city to visit with the Srirangam temple and several other Vishnu and Shiva temples located in the vicinity.
